Coming from the world of computer programmer, I understand the concepts of modifications, revisions and new releases as a constant attempt to improve results and outcomes. In our technically savvy world, we realize that all we have to do is wait 6 months to get a newer and better product. We live in a world of constant change and we are always expecting better results.
Even though the message of Jesus Christ cannot be improved, out strategies to share the Good News can be improved. As many of you know, we have started to utilize a church planting strategy which incorporates the Discovery Bible Study. It is within this study we build intimacy through small group participation; scripture memorization through repeated readings and retelling of Bible passages, Bible understanding through inductive and discovery methods, and transformed lives through obedience to God's word.
But even with components that led to Christian maturity, we are finding a lack of internal motivation to follow through. From the beginning we have tried to deconstruct the authoritative structure found within the church and empower the people to interact with the Bible for themselves. But even though we did not teach or preach and handed over leadership to people within the community, we are still finding their motivation to finish their homework (spend time with God and accomplish their promises to God) is still externally motivated by us. How do we know this? Because when we are not there, nothing happens.
Because of this, we are starting to incorporate personal time within the study, where participates are encouraged to spend daily time with God in prayer and reflection. The goal is that a training in spiritual disciplines will develop an intimacy between God and the participant, and bring about a self-motivation to obey God's word in action and deed. Too often we teach only knowledge but don't demonstrate how to live the Christian life. As stated in previous letters, our goal is not a knowledge saturated Christian but a life transformed for God's glory. In agreement with United World Mission's new mission statement, our vision is to produce individuals (churches) that delight God and surprise the world.
Please pray with us that this new modification to our strategy will produce better results. We believe that God is preparing the way for something great among the Mapuche and the people of Chile. Please pray that we will have the ears to hear God's desires and the capacity to make changes to bring Him the glory.
